2026 Lifetime Achievement Award Winner – John Tyson Harvey, MD
The Canadian Ophthalmological Society (COS) is proud to announce Dr. John Tyson Harvey as the recipient of the 2026 Lifetime Achievement Award.

This award is given annually to honour a COS member who has made significant contributions to eye and vision care, a sustained impact nationally and internationally on the growth of the profession, and maintained the highest standard of patient care in their practice.
Dr. John Harvey received his undergraduate medical degree from the University of Western Ontario in 1975 and completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Ottawa. He pursued fellowship training in oculoplastic and orbital surgery at the University of Iowa in 1980, followed by additional clinical experience at St. John Eye Hospital in Jerusalem.
In 1983, Dr. Harvey joined McMaster University, where he served in a full-time academic role until his retirement in June 2023. He contributed extensively to residency and fellowship training, authored more than 60 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, and held numerous leadership roles within the University and affiliated hospitals.
Two initiatives were particularly meaningful to him: the reinstatement of McMaster’s ophthalmology residency program in 2002 (with its first resident entering in 2005), and the establishment of the Hamilton Regional Eye Institute in 2008, which brought together the region’s hospital-based ophthalmology services.
Throughout his career, Dr. Harvey remained dedicated to global ophthalmic care, participating in more than 50 outreach projects across over 20 countries. His career reflects a deep commitment to education, collaboration, and service. He remains sincerely grateful to the colleagues, trainees, and patients who made this work possible.
