The COS Award for Excellence in Ophthalmic Research was first presented in 1995 at the COS's 60th Annual Meeting and Exhibition in Victoria. Originally the award was to recognize advances in refractive laser surgery but this was expanded in later years to include all innovations in ophthalmic research.
Coherent-AMT initiated the award and had been the only sponsor since its inception. In 2007 the name was changed to COS Award for Excellence in Ophthalmic Research. The award is open to residents, fellow and medical students working in recognized Canadian ophthalmology programs.
