Careers

Dear Ophthalmic Medical Personnel,

The Canadian Society of Ophthalmic Medical Personnel (CSOMP) is responsible for promoting our profession in Canada, and we are continuing to undertake exciting new initiatives to serve you better. With the publication of our needs assessment survey in the CJO, we have demonstrated the great need for more certified Allied Ophthalmic Personnel (AOP) along with more training programs in Canada. (See survey and related editorial.)

For those preparing for the COMT practical exam, the International Joint Commission of Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (IJCAHPO) has launched its simulation exam. The exam was tested by practicing COMTs to confirm its validity. It is offered throughout the US and Canada at various meetings during the year to those interested candidates.

Also please take note that the criteria have changed for the certification exams. You can view the updated criteria on the IJCAHPO website.

We continue to ask for your support as we strive to increase membership in CSOMP and awareness of our profession. Please consider joining your professional society. A great way to becoming a member is through the joint CSOMP/ATPO membership. This provides access to the both the Canadian and US professional groups. CSOMP continues to encourage certification through the International Joint Commission of Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (IJCAHPO).

CSOMP offers several different membership options. We have a 1 year membership at $35CDN, a 2 year rate at $50CDN and students enrolled in an approved training program can join at a special rate of $25CDN for the duration of their studies. We also have a special combined CSOMP-ATPO membership option for $75US annually.

CSOMP offers annual continuing education opportunities during the annual COS and Sally Letson conferences. The annual June COS meeting is held in various cities across Canada and the Sally Letson is held in Ottawa every September. These meetings are a wonderful opportunity to earn IJCAHPO continuing education credits and learn from experienced colleagues.

Thank you for participating in your chosen career.
