Teaching lecture: A practical approach to nystagmus

This course reviews the clinical features of various types of nystagmus. By using a systematic pathophysiologic approach, clinicians will develop a rational decision-making process for the diagnosis and management of nystagmus. Numerous videos will be presented.
OBJECTIVES
At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Understand nystagmus using a practical approach
- Identify the salient features of different types of nystagmus, their etiology and pathophysiology, as well as important diagnostic and treatment issues
- Improve their clinical management of nystagmus

Thinking outside the box is more than just a cliché. It means approaching problems in new, innovative ways; conceptualizing problems differently; and understanding your position in relation to any situation in a way you’d never thought of before. With use of “thinking outside the box” principles, orthoptic graduates and students are encouraged to be innovative as they can in their approach to developing their career and delivering high quality eye care.
OBJECTIVES
At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Identify novel ways to conduct an orthoptic job search
- Identify international requirements for orthoptic employment
- Describe how orthoptists are used globally to provide care
- Describe non-traditional positions for orthoptists
- Obtain the ophthalmologists’ perspective of how an orthoptist can enhance patient care and an ophthalmologists practice
- Develop approaches for being the orthoptist the doctor cannot “live without”
- Develop approaches for how the orthoptist can educate others about their full scope of practice work to enhance your role in a clinic

Presentation: Diplopia quantification for injury assessments

Ophthalmologists are frequently called upon to document diplopia and give a medical opinion on the extent of disability after injury for compensation. By extension, these duties often fall to the orthoptist. There are many factors to consider and the orthoptist must anticipate all of the answers the ophthalmologist needs to form an accurate medical opinion.
OBJECTIVES
At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Describe the role of the orthoptist in a therapeutic and medical legal standpoint
- Describe the essential elements of the ocular motility exam and methods of quantifying diplopia
- Be able to determine pre-existing vs. acquired motility deficits
- Determine the elements of the report for the referring ophthalmologist
