Medical Retina Sub-Specialist, Halifax, Nova Scotia

Dalhousie University and the Nova Scotia Health Authority are seeking a qualified full-time ophthalmologist with sub-specialty training in medical retina to practice in a challenging and rewarding community-based and academic environment. Candidates for this position must have an MD and should have completed a minimum of 12 months of post-residency fellowship training in medical retina including active exposure and participation in clinical research. There is a possibility of limited OR time availability for general ophthalmology surgical cases with this position, to be discussed with the successful candidate. The successful candidate will possess excellent clinical skills for both adult and pediatric cases, and demonstrate an ongoing interest in clinical research and teaching. The successful applicant must be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and be eligible for a full medical license in the province of Nova Scotia and for attending privileges at the Nova Scotia Health Authority. The successful candidate will join a community-based practice in Halifax with access to diagnostic/laser facilities at the hospital setting as necessary. This will be a clinical continuing university appointment at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor.

Dalhousie University and the Nova Scotia Health Authority (NSHA) are seeking a qualified full-time ophthalmologist with sub-specialty training in Neuro-Ophthalmology to practice in a challenging and rewarding academic medical environment. Candidates for this position should have an MD and have completed a residency in ophthalmology and a minimum of 12-24 months of post-residency fellowship training in neuro-ophthalmology, including active exposure and participation in clinical research. Candidates will possess excellent clinical and surgical skills and demonstrate an ongoing interest in clinical and/or basic science research and teaching. Candidates should be certified or eligible for certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and be eligible for a license in the province of Nova Scotia and for attending privileges at NSHA. The successful candidate will join the hospital-based group of sub-specialized ophthalmologists located at the QEII Hospital. The candidate will be offered a Continuing Appointment with Dalhousie University.

Comprehensive Ophthalmologist, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia

The Nova Scotia Health Authority is currently seeking a Comprehensive Ophthalmologist to provide surgical and clinical care in Cape Breton. The individual would be an autonomous, patient oriented, team player. Sub-specialty training and experience would be a welcome asset.

The OR has a new Zeiss microscope with Callisto Eye system for Premium IOLs, an Alcon phaco machine and an outstanding surgical support staff. There is one full day per week of OR time available for local procedures. The ambulatory care centre has Zeiss Cirrus OCT, fluoroscein angiography, Argon and YAG lasers as well as excellent clinic support staff including a COMT and nursing. One day per week is available for injections, lasers and minor procedures. Orthoptic services are available locally.

Cape Breton is a naturally beautiful area on the ocean with a strong, family oriented community. A wonderful work-life balance is possible with fabulous outdoor activities such as golf, hiking, cycling, boating and fishing. There is a handy regional airport with direct flights to Toronto and Halifax.

Surgical Retina and General Ophthalmology locum, Corner Brook, Newfoundland

1 year Surgical Retina and General Ophthalmology locum available with flexible start date and duration in Beautiful Corner Brook Newfoundland. Potential for full time position for the right candidate. 1 day per week OR time (Tuesday) plus additional OR days as they come available and access to after hours surgery for emergency cases. Clinic days are based out of the fully equipped Western Health Eye Care Centre. Equipment includes digital fluorescein angiography, OCT/OCT angiography, new Humphrey visual field analyzer, IOL master 700, corneal topography, a-scan, b-scan, yag laser, SLT laser, argon laser, two fully equipped lanes for locum position with EMR, slit lamp cameras and haag streit slitlamps.

We are a very well rounded group with subspecialty training in medical and surgical retina, general opththalmology, advanced anterior segment surgery, glaucoma, and oculo-plastics. There is an Orthoptist on staff full-time that covers all orthoptics as well as the ophthalmic photography, Ivfa, oct etc. We also have a pediatric ophthalmologist who does outreach clinics in the area multiple times per year.

I will continue to work on a limited basis during the locum and be available for consultation/collaboration for complicated surgical retina cases as needed.

General Ophthalmology call will be shared among the group of four ophthalmologists.

Eligible candidates will be a, or be eligible for, Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in ophthalmology and eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Locum – Surgical ophthalmologist – Prince George, BC

The Department of Ophthalmology is seeking an ophthalmologist for a 6 month locum with potential for a permanent position. The start date would be August 1st, 2018. This is a surgical locum with cataract surgery being done at a private surgical centre (under public funding). There are also be hospital privileges assigned which offers an ambulatory care area, minor treatment room and therapeutic lasers, as well as after hours emergency cases. This is essentially a comprehensive position, however subspecialty training may be beneficial.

Prince George is BC’s northern capital and has a population of ~80,000 with a catchment area of over 200,000. There is a regional international airport offering a short 1 hour flight to Vancouver and direct flights to various other destinations. For the outdoor enthusiast the area offers limitless activities including golfing, biking, hiking, fishing, hunting, skiing and ATVing. Prince George is also home to the University of Northern British Columbia and the College of New Caledonia, both offering great educational opportunities. We are also lucky to have the Northern Medical Program which graduates 32 medical students and trains several residents a year.

This practice and NHSF offer the full scope of general ophthalmology services, including Cataract surgery, Anti-VEGF treatments, SLT, Corneal crosslinking, surface/dry eye clinics (including Lipiflow) and also refractive surgery. Ample operating time are available in a dedicated eye care facility. The facility has a vast array of diagnostic equipment, 2 modern surgical suites equipped with Zeiss Lumera 700 ceiling-mounted microscopes and Centurion Phacoemulsification units. 1,000 Cataract procedures are performed each year at this NHSF. Existing sub-specialties in the region include pediatric, refractive and medical retina services. The practice currently hosts two full-time and one part-time Associates. Call expectations are 1:4.

Call for grant proposals to National Glaucoma Research (NGR), a program of BrightFocus Foundation

Applications for 2019 awards are due on November 9, 2018. BrightFocus provides research funds for U.S. domestic as well as international researchers pursuing pioneering research with relevance to the prevention and treatment of glaucoma.

The maximum award value of the NGR Standard Award is US $200,000, payable over two years.

Preference is given to exciting, cutting-edge type projects that would not, at their present stage, be competitive for large government or industry awards. Typically, these awards are made to junior investigators or to more established investigators who are proposing particularly innovative research.
