Membership categories & fees

There are six categories of membership in the Canadian Ophthalmological Society (COS), each with its own qualifications and benefits:

Please note: Only Active Members shall have the right to one vote at any business meeting of COS members. No voting by proxy or mailed ballots will be allowed for matters dealt with at annual business meetings or special meetings of members.

1. Active Member

The Active Member category is open to physicians who have received at least one of the following:

  • certification of fellowship in ophthalmology from the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada
  • a diploma of the American Board of Ophthalmology or its equivalent
  • certification by the board of the province in which he or she practices
  • other specialist qualifications in ophthalmology deemed acceptable to the COS Board of Directors

FEES: $671 + HST
Note: Graduated fee following Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada certification: balance of graduating year, complimentary; 2nd year, 50% of fee; 3rd year, 75% of fee; 4th year $671 + HST

2. Associate Member

The Associate Member category is open to individuals who:

  • hold the degree of Doctor of Medicine and are not certified ophthalmologists but whose professional standing is acceptable to the COS Board of Directors and
  • are engaged in a field allied with, or in a basic science related to, ophthalmology

FEES: $345 + HST

3. Affiliated Member

The Affiliated Member category is open to any person who:

  • holds the degree of Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Philosophy or an equivalent degree or professional standing acceptable to the COS Board of Directors and
  • is not an ophthalmologist, but is engaged in a field allied with, or in a basic science related to, ophthalmology

Affiliated Members may participate in debate at all business meetings, and shall receive all publications of the Society.

FEES: $345 + HST

4. International Member

The International Member category is open to physicians:

  • who hold a valid and unrestricted license to practice ophthalmology in a country other than Canada and
  • whose professional standing is acceptable to the COS Board of Directors

FEES: $562 (Canadian dollars)

5. Life Member

The Life Member category is open to individuals who:

  • have been Active Members of COS for the previous consecutive 25 years and
  • have either reached the age of 65 or have retired from practice

FEES: Still in practice: $307.50 + HST; no longer in practice: $90 + HST; the annual meeting registration fee for Life Members is $452

6. Junior Member

The Junior Member category is open to physicians who are either:

  • engaged on a full-time basis in an accredited Canadian ophthalmology program or
  • actively engaged in a recognized ophthalmology specialist program
